9 Plants for a Stunning Fall Garden

Fall is an incredibly rewarding time to be in the garden. Foliage turns, late bloomers take center stage, and several summer plants just keep performing right up until frost. It is also one of the best times to plant, since new additions get a head start growing strong roots before winter sets in. Just remember that even drought tolerant plants need regular, deep watering for their first couple of years while they get established.

Heather blooms from summer into fall and comes in shades of white, bright pink, and mauve, with foliage that often takes on striking color of its own as the weather cools. It prefers sandy, well drained soil and very little fertilizer, and a light shearing after blooming keeps it compact.

Nandina brings color in every season, with new growth in shades of orange and scarlet that mellow to blue-green over summer before turning vivid red in fall, and it is largely pest and disease free.

Oriental fountain grass adds movement to the garden with feathery, smoky rose blooms that catch the afternoon light, making it a nice fit for containers or an informal border.

Asters bring a real burst of color just as other plants start to fade, with purples, blues, pinks, and whites that also happen to be popular with bees and butterflies.

Chrysanthemums, or mums, are the classic fall flower for a reason, blooming in a wide range of colors from late summer through fall and holding up well as cut flowers too.

Japanese anemone offers a softer look, with white or pink blooms from late summer into early fall, and needs very little care once established.

Helenium rounds things out with gold, orange, and red blooms from midsummer through fall, and deadheading after the first flush often brings a second round of color in September.

Russian sage brings airy, silvery foliage and spires of lavender flowers, is drought tolerant once established, and is another favorite with pollinators.

Escallonia is a reliable evergreen shrub with glossy foliage and pink flowers over a long stretch of summer and fall, and it holds up well in a range of light conditions depending on the variety.
