New Townhome Development Underway in North Salem

A long-vacant property in north Salem is being transformed into a new residential community, marking a meaningful shift for an area that has faced ongoing challenges over the years.

The 8.5-acre site along Portland Road, just east of Lancaster Drive, was previously known for illegal camping activity that had persisted for years. The property has now been repositioned for development, with plans moving forward for a 74-unit townhome community alongside a mixed-use building.

Killen Development acquired the site in 2022 and has since advanced plans to bring new housing and commercial space to the area. The project received site plan approval and is currently under construction.

In addition to the townhomes, the development will include a mixed-use building with three retail spaces. Plans also call for off-street parking and designated open space, creating a more complete and functional environment for future residents.

The retail component is actively being marketed, with a focus on attracting a restaurant or coffee shop to anchor the drive-thru space and help activate the corridor.

Projects like this highlight the ongoing evolution happening across Salem, where underutilized or distressed properties are being reimagined into housing that supports long-term growth and stability.

As more developments like this move forward, they not only add much-needed housing supply but also contribute to the broader revitalization of key areas throughout the city.
