A Pacific Northwest Guide to Growing Citrus
Growing citrus in the Pacific Northwest may seem surprising, but with the right approach, it’s not only doable, it’s incredibly rewarding. Dwarf citrus varieties thrive in containers here, making them perfect for patios, porches, and bright indoor spaces. Their glossy evergreen leaves, fragrant flowers, and long fruiting seasons add year-round interest, even during our gray winter months.

Because citrus isn’t fully cold-hardy, growing it in pots allows for easy winter protection. Container-grown plants actually prefer being slightly rootbound and still produce full-sized, flavorful fruit. With a bit of planning, citrus can be both beautiful and productive in our climate.
Some citrus varieties are better suited for the Pacific Northwest than others. Improved Meyer Lemon is a favorite for its reliable fruiting and sweet, aromatic lemons. Bearss Seedless Lime, aka “the bartender’s lime”, is one of the most cold-tolerant limes and produces juicy, seedless fruit. Changsha Mandarin offers easy-to-peel sweetness with better cold tolerance than most oranges.

For something more unique, Eustis Limequat, Variegated Pink Lemon, Variegated Calamondin, and Buddha’s Hand Citron all bring visual interest along with bold fragrance or flavor, making them great additions to a container collection.

Citrus plants need plenty of light, ideally six to eight hours of direct sun daily. Water deeply, then allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings, and avoid overwatering, especially in winter. Feed during spring and summer, pause fertilizing in colder months, and prune as needed to keep plants compact and healthy.
Citrus offers more than just fruit. The evergreen foliage, fragrant blooms, and vibrant color bring life to outdoor and indoor spaces when most plants are dormant. Fresh, homegrown citrus is simply a bonus.
