The Dahlias Are Back in Bloom!
Every year, one of Oregon’s most colorful traditions comes alive just outside of Portland: the Dahlia Festival in Canby. Imagine strolling through nearly 50 acres of fields bursting with over 500,000 dahlias in full bloom, representing more than 375 unique varieties. It’s a photographer’s dream and the perfect backdrop for a summer outing.

The festival has something for everyone. You’ll find food carts serving up local favorites, live music on weekends, and a gift shop filled with floral-inspired treasures. You can even take home fresh-cut dahlias or order tubers to plant in your own garden next spring. Classes are offered throughout the festival, so whether you want to learn floral design or tips on growing dahlias yourself, there’s always something new to experience. And with free admission and parking, there’s really no excuse not to go.
If you’ve been thinking about planting dahlias in your own yard, here are a couple quick tips: they thrive when planted in warm, well-drained soil, ideally once the ground temperature hits about 60 degrees. Be patient, as it can take several weeks for sprouts to push through the soil. A little planning and care now can reward you with strong, vibrant blooms that brighten your yard year after year!

The Dahlia Festival is open Wednesday through Sunday from August 1 to September 30, and it’s one of those local experiences that reminds us why Oregon is such a beautiful place to call home.
